Information about MATCH TYPES as played by Golf Ball Maniacs:
The 2007 MATCH PLAY TOURNEY will be played at Newport News Golf Club
on Saturday, June 23, 2007.

Matches will last nine holes, and will be played by per-hole handicaps.
That is, scorecards will be noted as to which holes each player gets a stroke upon.
The match is settled when one player leads by a number of holes greater
than the number of holes remaining.

Sixteen players will start their matches on #1 at the Cardinal course at 7:45a.
The field will be reduced to eight players after the first nine holes,
then the second nine match will cut the field to four players.

The four remaining players will tee off at 2p on the Deer Run Championship course.
The first nine will leave two undefeated golfers who will play for the championship
on the back nine.

There will be no triple-bogie limit in the match play tourney,
but gimmies ARE allowed.

There will be no birdie bucks, and no closest-to-pin contests,
in the 2007 Match Play Tournament. All winnings will indeed
credit toward the Money Leader$ List.

The entry fee is $20, to be paid out as follows:

1st Place (winner of final 9-hole match): $150 1-1-1-1
2nd Place (loser of final 9-hole match): $75 1-1-1-0
3rd Place (winner of final consolation match): $35 1-1-0-1
4th Place (loser of final consolation match): $20 1-1-0-0
8 winners of 2nd-nine consolation match): each $5 0-1

Total: ...................................... $320

Explanation: Sixteen golfers will play in the first
9-hole match. Eight will win, eight will lose.
If you beat your opponent in round one, then you
play vs the other match winner in your foursome
for round 2. The foursome remains together for
all 18 holes, the first round losers playing a
consolation match for $5 during the second nine.

All golfers who have lost a match in the first
two rounds may go home, or they may come along
as a gallery for rounds 3 and 4.

At 2pm, the four undefeated golfers will begin
round 3. The two winners of round 3 will compete
for the championship in round four. The two
losers of round three will play the fourth nine,
competing for third place.

This is a pretty cool scheme, in that it offers
an incentive for the golfers who get beat in
round one to continue playing their 18 hole round,
but there's a hidden wrinkle as well: If you win
round one, and lose round two, you win no money.
But if lose round one, and win round two, you
win the $5 consolation prize.

Sorry! ;)

================================================================

The 2007 Match Play Tournament will be played by the strict rules
of golf. You can buy a rule book at any pro shop, or read the
rules online here.

If a co-competitor informs you of a rule you are not aware of,
please do not blame him simply because he is well-informed.
He did not write the rules.

A few examples of the rules we will be following:

Play the ball as it lies. Do not move or adjust the ball from
the moment you put it in play on the tee, until it is on the green.

Out of bounds and lost ball penalty is stroke and distance. That is,
you drop the ball where you last struck it, and add a penalty stroke.
If you tee off OB, for example, you tee it up again and you are hitting
your third stroke. If your ball might be unfindable or OB, your
should play a provisional ball that will be played if you cant find
the first one.

Your putt strikes another ball on the green, 2-stroke penalty.

Play out of turn, your opponent can insist you replay the shot.

HANDICAPS

Our handicaps for the matches will be 90% of our standing GBM
handicaps. This adjustment is intended to bring our handicaps
more in line with USGA handicaps.

Your handicap for 9 holes will be one half of your (18-hole)
handicap. For example, if your handicap is 24, your 9-hole
handicap will be 12. See Example.

If a match is tied after nine holes, the match will continue
until a player wins a hole.

This playoff is easy to accomplish in rounds 2 and 4 (which end
on #18), but it's tricky in rounds 1 and 3, where players will
continue on hole 10. They will actually be playing two matches
at once, on a single ball of course. Match A will be the playoff,
and Match B will be the round 2 match. The score you shoot on #10
will count in the Match A playoff, and once it is settled who you
are playing against in round 2 (according to whether you win or lose),
that same score will be your score against your round 2 opponent.

IF something happens that we cannot get onto the course for playoffs
in round 1, a tie will be won by whichever player drew first blood.
